He was a minister and the one who eulogized his mother-in-law 30 years
after her death.

Samuel and his wife died one week apart, Samuel going first.

Martha MCILVAIN [Parents] was born on 1 Nov 1782 in Lewistown, Cumberland Co, PA. She died on 3 Apr 1846 in Columbus, Franklin Co, OH. She married Samuel M KING on 8 Jan 1800 in Columbus, Franklin Co, OH, by Dr James Hoge, Presbyterian Min.

She died one week after her husband.

John MCILVAIN [Parents] was born on 27 Dec 1789 in Bourbon Co, KY. He died on 31 Jul 1858 in Columbus, Franklin Co, OH. He was buried in Greenlawn Cem, Columbus, Franklin Co, OH. He married Lydia HAVENS on 4 Feb 1816 in Columbus, Franklin Co, OH.

John was a busy man with several careers, many of which occurred
concurrently.

Residences & events:

5/20/1813 Franklin Co, OH. He joined the Army as 3rd Lt of the 26th
US Inf and advertised in the Freeman's Chronicle at Columbus for
deserters.

8/15/1814 He was in the Battle of Ft Erie and "brevetted for
conspicious bravery."

1818 He was made Col in the Ohio militia, serving until 1820. He was
a 2nd Lt when he resigned from the Regular Army and a brevet colonel.

1818 Following his discharge from the army he was elected Ohio state
librarian for the next 2 years.

He was County Sheriff in 1819, 1821, 1827.

5/1822 He was made adjutant general of Ohio under Gov Tribble.

8/22/1822 He was among the promoters of a "grand squirrel hunt" to
rid the county of the large number threatening the crops.

1829 Piqua, OH. John was appointed US Indian agent.

Columbus, OH where he was the first proprietor of a tavern in that
town.

1830 He was named to one of the positions of clerk of the US Court
and maintained that position until 1858.

1831-2 He "erected a steam saw mill at the head of the canal where
Hunter's warehouse afterward stood."

1832 He helped lay out lots in a 2 acre tract near the Canal which
became known as McElvain's Additions. One of the first lots sold was
to Bishop Charles Petit McIlvaine, former chaplain to West Point.

1834 In the directory of professional and business men of Columbus,
he was listed as Indian agent.

1840-1841 He was director of the Ohio penitentiary.

He had command of the Infantry as one of two marshalls to lead the
parade at the formal opening of the new canal. Among those in the
parade were Capt Joseph McElvain's troop of dragoons, Capt O'Hara's
Columbus Artillery , and Gov Warren and staff.

Columbus history recorded the following about him:

"Colonel John McElvain prominent in the early history of Columbus,
performed a very gallant part in the defense of Fort Erie against an
attack by the British on August 15, 1814. He was twice a presidential
elector on the Jackson ticket..."

Lydia HAVENS was born in 1798 in Windham Co, CT. She died on 10 Nov 1854 in Columbus, Franklin Co, OH. She was buried in Greenlawn Cem, Columbus, Franklin Co, OH. She married John MCILVAIN on 4 Feb 1816 in Columbus, Franklin Co, OH.

John HUNTER.

Joseph, Esq HUNTER was born on 8 Aug 1763 in Cumberland Co, PA. He died on 6 Jun 1834 in Columbus, Franklin Co, OH. He married Mary Margaret McGaughey on 17 Oct 1782.

Joseph was a Private in Capt James Howell's Co 7th Batl of Cumberland
Co, PA, enlisting August, 1782, under Col James Purdy. This was the
same regiment as Samuel McElvain, father of Andrew and Margaret.

He was one of the early settlers of Franklin Co, OH, arriving before
1800. He lived in Clinton Twp along w/Samuel McElvain and John
Hunter. He was one of the founding fathers of the 1st Presbyterian
Church at Franklinton, OH.

Joseph's will dated 3/1828, named executors: sons, William and
Joseph, Jr. Witnesses were J.R. Swan, Freedom Seever, and Samuel
Bigger. There was a codicil added on 12/10/1829 which was witnessed
by J.R. Swan and Mease Smith.

The will was probated 2/16/1835.

Mary Margaret McGaughey.Mary married Joseph, Esq HUNTER on 17 Oct 1782.

He served as executor of his father's estate.

Margaret MCILVAIN [Parents] was born on 17 Oct 1796 in KY. She died on 24 Jul 1827. She married William HUNTER on 25 Nov 1817 in Columbus, Franklin Co, OH, by J P King, acting JP.

history of Upper Sandusky." At the formal opening of the village, he
jointly bought some lots with brother, Andrew.

Purdy, called Colonel, was elected 1st Sgt of OH Vol for the Mexican
War. His brother, Andrew, was Capt.

His vocations included being an official in the Ohio penitentiary and
an Indian agent for years. He was the receiver at the land office at
the time of his death.

His brith year may be 1801.

Levonia RISLEY was born in 1805. She died in 1882. She was buried in Greenlawn Cem, Columbus, Franklin Co, OH. She married Samuel Purdy MCILVAIN on 23 May 1820 in Columbus, Franklin Co, OH.

Levonia had a niece, Levonia Risley, who also married a Samuel
McElvain, son of James and Agnes, making 2 Levonia Risley McElvains in
the family.

John L(isle) MCILVAIN [Parents] was born in 1815 in Franklin Co, OH. He died in 1885. He married Frances Ann Scott.

Samuel Purdy MCILVAIN [Parents] was born in 1817 in Columbus, Franklin Co, OH. He died in 1901 in Columbus, Franklin Co, OH. He married Levonia RISLEY on 28 Feb 1850.

He was one of the few members of the family who spent his entire life
in Columbus, OH.

He was the fifth collector of the Columbus Canal, a position he held
for many years. He held many positions of trust and honor in
Columbus and the State of Ohio.

He was superintendent of the County Infirmary from 1860-1871.

Levonia RISLEY was born in 1832 in Allen Co, OH. She died on 9 Apr 1907. She married Samuel Purdy MCILVAIN on 28 Feb 1850.

Margaret was a teacher and principal of the Bellows Ave School in
Columbus, OH. She never married.

She had in her possession at one time, the Bible of her Grandfather,
James McElvain.

  M vi Joseph Samuel MCILVAIN was born in 1870. He died on 5 Jan 1926. Joseph resided.

He never married.

Moses MCILVAIN [Parents] was born about 1750. He died in Woodford Co, KY, near Versailles. He was buried in Pisgah, Woodford Co, KY, churchyard. He married Margaret HODGE.

He was named for his father.

Residences & events:

Abt 1761 Calf Pasture Valley, VA. Following the death of his father, Moses joined brother, John, in the move to VA. He bought land next to his father-in-law, Samuel Hodge.

Pisgah, Woodford Co, KY. It was here that Moses was captured by Indians and taken to Detroit but he managed to escape and returned to KY. At a 1940s celebration of the foundation of Lexington the incident was the subject of a stage play and received considerable notice in Lexington newspapers.

In accordance with old Scottish traditions, his will, filed at
Versailles, KY, mentions only the children who had not previously
received their share of the inheritance. It mentioned minor children
Andrew and Elizabeth, and son William, who lived on the home farm,
son-in-law, Robert Armstrong, and mentions "if any of my other sons or
daughters may see fit to care for my son Andrew and daughter
Elizabeth,"etc.

Son, James, was administrator of his estate.

Margaret HODGE died in Pisgah, Woodford Co, KY. She married Moses MCILVAIN.

She was from MD.

They had the following children:
