William VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born on 13 Jan 1828 in OH. He died in 1912 in CA. William resided.

William went west with brother, Hiram, during the Gold Rush.

11/1904 Morgan Hill, CA. He dictated the family tree to son, Theodore, who later forwarded it to the family association.

He had the following children:

Hiram VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born on 6 Dec 1829 in OH. He married Female Bannister in Gilroy, CA. Hiram resided.

9/4/1849 Piatt Co, IL. He purchased 40 acres of land at S10 T18N R05E for $50. His residence was already Piatt Co at the time.

1850 Piatt Co, IL. Hiram was living with another family as a laborer.

1850-1860 CA. Hiram and brother, William, went to find gold, the outcome is unknown but both remained in CA.

Female Bannister.Female married Hiram VAN GUNDY in Gilroy, CA.

Her husband's name was F H Newlove.

John Neal died in 1877. He married Amelia VAN GUNDY on 10 Jul 1851 in Piatt Co, IL, by Rev John Bratenham. John resided.

John was probably the brother of Rachel, wife of Charles Wesley Van Gundy, i.e, brother and sister married brother and sister.

Amelia VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born on 3 Dec 1833 in OH. She died in 1901 in Morehead, IA. She married John Neal on 10 Jul 1851 in Piatt Co, IL, by Rev John Bratenham.

Amelia and John had 2 sons.


Joseph T VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born on 28 May 1845 in OH. He died in 1915. He married Eudora "Dora" Kiser on 20 Apr 1876 in Piatt Co, IL. Joseph resided.

Joseph at age 3, lived with older brother, Charles, and his new bride, Rachel, following the death of their mother. Following Rachel's death 4 years later, he went to Iowa to live with his 18 year old sister, Amelia Neal, who had married 2 years prior.

Joseph fought in the Civil War and was in the battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas. It was there he was wounded in the leg one night. The following morning doctors decided to remove the leg and from that time on, he used a wooden leg. A niece remembered opening a closet door after he died and the leg tumbled out.

It is unknown when he returned to the Monticello, Piatt Co, IL, area but most of his history can be found there where he is often called "Mr. Van Gundy."

He had several occupations in his lifetime:

He operated a grocery store which he later sold to A.B. Binder.

He was a druggist in partnership with a German immigrant named Bohn.

4/10/1872 He was the Treasurer of Monticello and also spent some time as county clerk.

7/9/1873 He was a charter member of the Fraternal Encampment #145, I.O.O.F. Lodge and immediately elected as a presiding officer, that of C.P. He was installed in the same office again 1/2/1882. The membership at that time totaled 30 and met twice a month in the Odd-Fellow's hall over J.A. Brown's store.

1877 He was listed as County Treasurer.

1898-1912 He seved as postmaster of Monticello.

1880 Monticello Twp, Piatt Co, IL. In the census, he is listed as a druggist born in Ohio with parents both born in Germany. He had a boarder, Viola Walker, 20, living with him.

Joe outlived his wife and 4 young children. His estate was divided
among his nieces and nephews, $400 of which was received by John Neal.

Eudora "Dora" Kiser was born in 1845. She died in 1910. She married Joseph T VAN GUNDY on 20 Apr 1876 in Piatt Co, IL.

At one time Eudora was the organist at the Presbyterian Church of Monticello.

The 1880 census lists her age as 25, making her birth date 1855.

Will Porter.Will married Martha Ellen "Mattie" VAN GUNDY on 27 Sep 1874 in Piatt Co, IL, at the home of George Neal by I Villars.

Will was the son of a Methodist minister in Pickaway Co, OH.

Martha Ellen "Mattie" VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born about 1851. She married Will Porter on 27 Sep 1874 in Piatt Co, IL, at the home of George Neal by I Villars.

When their mother died, both Mattie and her brother, John, went to
live with their Neal grandparents. Following their deaths, they lived
with their uncle, George Neal, where they were both listed in the 1870
census.


John Neal VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born in 1852 in Monticello, Piatt Co, IL. He died on 11 Dec 1919 in El Reno, OK. He was buried in Red Rock Cem, El Reno, OK. He married Mary Susannah Best on 25 Mar 1875 in Macon Co, IL, by Isaac Williams, MG. John was buried in Red Rock Cem, El Reno, OK.

John's mother died when he was about 3 wks old, he was raised by her brother, George Neal who was childless.

He played the French harp, sang with a men's quartet that campaigned for Presidential candidate McKinley, and led the singing at church. For extra income, he gave voice lessons. His children were taught to sing from early childhood and one Christmas he bought them all harps.

1880 Monticello Twp, Piatt Co, IL, was still the address when John was listed in the census with his own family, and he was still a farmer.

1884 Dade Co, MO. Following the tragic death of son, George, they decided to move. They rented a house and the next year it burned, the landlord collected the insurance money and they were faced with another tragedy.

Faced with the depression, John farmed in the summer and ran singing schools in the winter with 20 pupils for 20 nights for $20. Mary taught subscription schools.

1895 Near El Reno, Indian Territory, OK. Having lost 2 more children, they decided to try their luck on one of the new homesteads offered by the government.

1903 Apparently that didn't work out either so they moved to the Capper's farm.

1905 Canadian Co, OK, 12 miles west of El Reno. They finally settled on the old homestead which remained in the family until 1971 when it was finally sold by heirs.

He suffered a stroke some 5 years prior to death and was bed ridden for the remainder of his life. Son, Delbert, moved back home to care for him and the farm.

Mary Susannah Best was born in 1855 in Center, KY. She died in 1948. She was buried in Red Rock Cem, El Reno, OK. She married John Neal VAN GUNDY on 25 Mar 1875 in Macon Co, IL, by Isaac Williams, MG.

A granddaughter said she was an active lady up until her 90s, drinking black boiled coffee from morning till night and hoeing weeds.

Following John's death she and daughter, Grace, took over the farm. They mended fences, milked cows, raised a truck garden and sold vegetables and produce at the Farm Women's Market in El Reno every Saturday.

Her death occured after breaking a hip.

She was buried beside husband, John.

  M i George VAN GUNDY was born in 1877 in Monticello, Piatt Co, IL. He died in 1883 in Piatt Co, IL, near Monticello.

George drowned in the swollen Sangamon River after falling from a railroad bridge one night as he and his father were taking a short cut home from church.
  M ii Charles Wesley II VAN GUNDY was born in 1879. He died on 28 Oct 1938.
  M iii Delbert Best VAN GUNDY was born in 1881. He died in 1975.
  F iv Grace Ethel VAN GUNDY was born in 1883 in MO. She died in 1972.

Grace never married and lived at home her until life. After her mother's death she continued to farm but finally gave it up when in her 80s.

She died of heart failure.

  M vi Ray VAN GUNDY was born in 1892. He died on 1 Jan 0002.

John Neal VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born in 1852 in Monticello, Piatt Co, IL. He died on 11 Dec 1919 in El Reno, OK. He was buried in Red Rock Cem, El Reno, OK. He married Mary Ann Barnes. John was buried in Red Rock Cem, El Reno, OK.

John Walter Miller was born on 4 Jun 1855 in Harristown, Macon Co, IL. He married Julia Alice VAN GUNDY on 9 Dec 1875 in Macon Co, IL, by John Tyler, MG.

Julia Alice VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born on 15 Oct 1857 in Decatur, Macon Co, IL. She died in 1936. She married John Walter Miller on 9 Dec 1875 in Macon Co, IL, by John Tyler, MG.

Probably brother and sister married sister and brother as both Julia and James married Millers.

Her father gave her a leather bound 1850 edition of "Sermons of John Wesley" which later generations also treasured.


Charles Wesley II VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born in 1879 in Monticello, Piatt Co, IL. He died on 28 Oct 1938 in Calumet, OK. He married Vara Edna Morrison in 1908.

Charles was the namesake of his Van Gundy grandfather.
