DW carried our ancestral lineage down one more generation.

Residences & events in DW's life:

Moultrie Co, IL. He amassed hundreds of acres of land over the years as shown by the many entries in the county land records, the total amount is not known. He bought from his in-laws, siblings, children, parents, and ordinary citizens of the county.

1900 Sullivan Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. According to the census his birthdate was 2/1860, not 1859 as family records state. He was listed as a farmer with 5 children.

10/19/1912 Brother, Elmer, sued DW and Laura for the sum of $2182.66 and won. The court appointed 3 commissioners to appraise 40 acres containing the house "for the purpose of having a homestead of the value of One Thousand Dollars, including the dwelling house set off to you (DW and Laura) and for your benefit as a homestead, if the same could be done without injury to the interest of the parties therein." The appraisel came back stating it could not be divided and set the valuation at $11,000. Details of the suit are not stated but from a later letter to Laura, one concludes that DW and Laura bought land from her brother, Chenny, for which Elmer must have loaned them the money but they never paid Chenny in full or paid Elmer back.

Bef 12/1913 Marion Co, IL. DW owned a farm near Salem which son, Robert, operated for about a year, having a daughter this date while living there.

Abt 1919 He built a grand home which was known throughout the county as the Van Gundy mansion. The Van Gundy Curve, on the northwest side of Sullivan, is so known, because of the house's location. The house was two story with a wraparound porch and lots of gingerbread. It was the first in the county with indoor plumbing and bathroom, and it had a basement with outside access so farm hands could shower and clean up before entering the house.

To this day local residents always mention the "mansion" whenever they meet someone with the Van Gundy name.

4/1924 DW took bankruptcy, the "report shows no property for distribution among the creditors..." In view of all the assets above, this seems odd

4/8/1940 Marion Co, IL. DW sold the property that he had owned there for at least the past 27 years, selling it by quit claim deed on this date to his 4 children for $1.00.

Descendants told of a competition between DW and the local banker, each having extreme dislike for the other, each always trying to outdo the other. Following DW's death, the banker bought DW's land and razed the mansion.

He died of a heart attack on the street at 16th & Broadway in Mattoon. His funeral was held at the Christian Church in Sullivan, IL.

His will, dated 1/29/1941, bequeathed $2250.00 each to sons, Robert and John. The balance of the estate was to be sold and divided equally among the four children. Some of the children, being disatisfied with the terms of the will, threatened to break it in court by having their father declared incompetent. An agreement was negotiated by their uncle, Elmer Van Gundy, to split the estate equally in exchange for his promise to make up the difference to Robert and John in his own will. However, Elmer never carried through with that promise. Other family members said DW intentionally tried to make up for unpaid loans by giving a lump sum to the children who did not owe him money. Cancelled checks verified the children borrowed from their father regularly.

Sons, Dewey and Robert, were co-executors of his estate.

Laura Belle NEAVES [Parents] was born on 22 Feb 1866 in Brooksville, Bracken Co, Ky. She died on 28 Dec 1931 in Moultrie Co, IL, at home. She was buried on 31 Dec 1931 in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. She married Daniel William VAN GUNDY on 4 Mar 1885 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL.

She was from the hills of KY and proud of it. She never liked to wear shoes or dress for guests and when important men came to call on her husband, she usually disappeared rather than play hostess.

The story is told that when DW built the new house, the first in Moultrie County with indoor plumbing, Laura made him build a new outhouse, too. She refused to let anyone use a commode under the same roof where she cooked. Grandchildren told of spending summers there working on the farm but they always had to take showers in the basement, via the outside basement door, before coming into the house itself and they were never allowed in the front part of the house unless they crawled across the carpets.

Laura Belle was a wealthy woman in her own right, owning several pieces of property soley in her name:

1/25/1893 Moultrie Co, IL. Her parents transferred some property at E 1/2 SE S21 T14 R5 to her for $1 by warranty deed.

1900 Sullivan Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. She inherited 80 acres of the old homestead at S3 T13 R5, along with $4400 in cash and securities, including the note of A.B. Patterson.

2/28/1901 She bought land from Isaac and Kate E Hudson by warranty deed for $9000. The land was situated at S 1/2 SE & NE SE S28 T14 R5.

8/13/1904 She bought land from brother, Robert, located at W 1/2 SW S12 T14 R5 for $1000 by warranty deed.

2/27/1906 Cyrus and Caroline Arnold sold their land at E 1/2 NW S9 T13 R5, to Laura for $400 by warranty deed.

9/14/1906 Brother, Robert, transferred more land with the same coordinates to her by quit claim deed for $1.

9/20/1906 On this date she received another plot at the same location from Flora A Hardy, also by quit claim deed, also for $1.

3/28/1911 Property she owned jointly with her husband was transferred to her name soley by warranty deed, no money exchanging hands. The plot was located at SW S22 T14 R5.

11/21/1917 Laura received the following letter from attorney and brother-in-law which probably refers to the land they bought from Chenny with a loan from Elmer, neither of whom got their money :

"My dear Laura:

I am sending you a copy of a letter that I have written to Elmer. Now I didn't like to write to Elmer, but the time has come when you and Dan must do right in this matter. You seem to be afraid of Elmer; seem to be afraid that if you will tell him or enter into an accounting with him as to Chin's land you will get into trouble. People don't generally get into trouble doing right. As far as I am concerned I am tired of seeing Chin's family suffer for the necessaries of life with no possible chance of relieving them. If any one has to take this land for Chin's life it would have been far better for Hill to have taken it than for Elmer to take it.

Now it will be easy for you and Chin and Dan and Elmer to determine how much is back and how much has been paid and settle this matter. I have men every few days talk to me about this that know about the matter, and they think it an outrage, and you can't afford to do otherwise in this matter than to get busy with yourself.

Now you show this letter to Dan and show it to Chin too, and don't fail in this. You know I write letters to some of your people who don't see fit to answer. I don't want an answer in this letter, but the matter must not rest any longer as it is. You must do right not only toward Chin, but toward yourself and toward your brothers and sisters and towards Chin's children.

Very truly yours,
WR Huff"

Laura Belle also died of a heart attack.

Laura's funeral was held at the Christian Church, Sullivan, IL, Rev. Barnett oficiating. Songs sung during the services included: Some Time We'll Understand, City Four Square, and At the End of the Long Road, which was a solo.

Ansel, as a tenant farmer, lived on the farm wherever he was working, which resulted in the family moving often.

Residences & events in his life:

1892 Moultrie Co, IL. He and Kate lived in a house on the Burt Seass farm where their 2 oldest daughters were married.

1896 Moultrie Co, IL. They had moved to the Bolin farm by the time their first son was born.

His death occured at the home of son, Earl, where he had been staying the last several months, on a Wednesday at 7 PM after battling Bright's disease for 18 mo.

The funeral was held at the First Christian Church in Sullivan with Rev CE Barnett in charge. Pallbearers were: Roy Seaman, CN Walker, Joseph Welch, Harley Wood, Dean Pickle, and WS Elder.

Katherine Hudson "Katie" GIPSON [Parents] was born on 7 Nov 1873 in Hidalgo, Jasper Co, IL. She died on 30 Oct 1911 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. She was buried on 1 Nov 1911 in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. She married Ansel Purvis POWELL on 4 Apr 1891 in Allenville, Moultrie Co, IL, Church of Christ by Elder JW Mathers.

Katie wrote a letter on Sullivan Dry Goods Co letterhead to her newlywed daughter, Edna Van Gundy. Although the letter was not dated, it had to be written between 1/5/1910, Edna's wedding, and 10/30/1911, Kate's death. It may well have been the last letter she wrote to Edna, the reason it was kept. She said:
