Ferrell Dale Hendrix was born on 10 Mar 1930. He married Pauline Elizabeth "Paud" VAN GUNDY on 21 Jun 1989. Ferrell resided.

He worked at ADM in Decatur, IL.

Pauline Elizabeth "Paud" VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born on 10 Dec 1930 in Mattoon, Coles Co, IL, at 1612 Prairie. She died on 20 Jun 1997 in Tower Hill, Christian Co, IL. She was buried on 24 Jun 1997 in Windsor Cem, Windsor, Shelby Co, IL. She married Ferrell Dale Hendrix on 21 Jun 1989.

Other marriages:
HENDERSON, Fred Harlan

She was maid of honor for the wedding of her sister, June.

Sister, Doris, told of Pauline's ingenuity in getting the job done:

"Our kids always liked to go to Aunt Paud's house. She was an excellent cook, and everyone just 'did their own thing.' One day Paud was mashing potatoes when her mixer quit. She went to the garage, returned with Fred's drill, and finished mashing the potatoes. Were the kids impressed!"

The funeral was held at the First Christian Church, Mattoon, IL, with Rev Rbt Clark officiating.

Joe Mack WEBB was born on 5 Aug 1930. He married Doris Gene VAN GUNDY on 26 Aug 1951 in Pygott, AR.

Residences & events in his life:

1951 Denver Co. At the time of their marriage he was in the US Air Force, stationed at Lowery Air Base. He served as a tail gunner.

1952 San Antonio, TX. Brooks Air Base was their address when the first son came.

1954 Atwater, CA, while Joe was serving at Castle Air Base, they had their second son.

621 Edgar, Mattoon, IL. Son, Van, would eventually own this house and install a pool in the backyard.

For years he was involved in a meat packing house in Charleston, IL, with his father. They were subjects of a newspaper article and photo while at the Wessex Saddleback Assoc meeting giving a meat cutting demonstration.

Joe and Doris spoiled the entire family while running the packing house. They accepted orders for X dollars worth of meat, rather than for specific cuts and weights. They always considered the size of the family when filling the orders, sending different varieties from order to order, and occasionally throwing in, for free, extra packages of meat they needed to move. Following the plant's closing, no one knew how much meat it took to feed their families nor what cuts to order for daily meals. There was a lot of trial and error before everyone returned to being normal customers.

Later, Joe later bought a gas station and also ran a trucking business in Mattoon, with son, Danny, being one of the drivers.

RR, Neoga, IL. Buying property in the country, Joe and Doris moved a short distance east of Neoga.

RR, Lerna, IL, where Joe bought a farm of about 300 acres.

Doris Gene VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born on 7 Mar 1934 in Mattoon, Coles Co, IL, at 1612 Prairie. She married Joe Mack WEBB on 26 Aug 1951 in Pygott, AR.

At the time of her marriage she worked at Wilb Walker's Supermarket in Mattoon. After the meat packing days with her husband, she went to work at the GE plant in Mattoon where she remained for several years before retiring in early 1997.

In 1998 she reached the 1 gallon milestone of blood donors.

They had the following children:

M i Mack Daniel WEBB was born on 25 Jul 1952.
M ii Van Allen WEBB was born on 26 Jul 1954.
M iii Matthew Jay "Matt" WEBB was born on 20 Jan 1959 in Mattoon, Coles Co, IL.

Matt lives with his chow dog "Pepper," as a single man and he "wants
it that way!"
F iv JoElla WEBB was born on 18 May 1960.

John VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born in 1830 in Morgan Co, IL. He died on 4 Jul 1905 in Decatur, Macon Co, IL. He was buried in Greenwood Cem, Decatur, Macon Co, IL. He married Sarah Ann SCOBEY on 1 Oct 1854 in Scott Co, IL.

Other marriages:
(VAN GUNDY), Martha

Our lineage continues with John. History records said he was a prominent and well known citizen. By the standards of the day, John and his family definitely lived a comfortable life.

Residences and events:

1830 Scott Co, IL. He owned a large tract of land of at least 300 acres.

1850 Naples, Scott Co, IL. John had property = $6000/1000 and was a farmer in the census. A Joseph Schultz, farm hand from Germany, was living with them and next door was the Henry Vannier family, related through nieces and nephews who married Vanniers.

3/15/1855 He bought several pieces of land at Naples at auction.

1860 Naples P.O., Scott Co, IL. At census time, he reported his property value the same as in 1850, $6000/1000 and Henry Vannier was still next door. Living in the same township was John's father.

10/11/1869 John and Sarah donated land near Naples to be used for a school with the provision that the property reverted back to them if the school ever vacated the premises. Also in the deed were instructions to school trustees to build a "good substantial Board
fence around said ground."

1870 Scott Co, IL. His property now = $8670/1980, Henry was still there next door.

11/13/1873 For $50 John sold all the downed and/or dead standing timber on a 2 acre plot to a Marshall Smith.

1873 Macon Co, IL, Milam Twp, near Decatur. In preparation for moving east with his siblings, John bought 238 1/2 acres in S31 T15N R3E, the same section as brother-in-law, Ellery Merris. However, John and his family did not move there for another couple of years.

1/18/1875 Scott Co, IL, was still their address when they sold 289 acres to Herman Vannier. They probably moved to Macon Co either the past fall or the following spring. The Vannier family passed this same land to descendants of John's brother, Adam, whose later generations still owned it in 1996.

1878 Milam Twp, Macon Co, IL. John was elected County Supervisor, re-elected in 1879. He was a farmer along with his political interests.

1896 1357 N Water St, Decatur, IL. Upon retirement, he moved to the city. The county history later said he "has since lived a retired life save that he has some financial interests and is now the vice president of the Macon County Telephone Company."

3/23/1897 Moultrie Co, IL. John bought county property by warranty deed from son, DW and Laura B, at S22 T14 R5. Perhaps he intended to move nearer the children but never did. It was probably the same land DW got back by warranty deed for $1 on 8/7/1905, about the time John died, being located at the same S22 T14 R5.

1899 Decatur, IL. When the telephone company was reorganized, John was again appointed vice president.

He and D B Folrath were owners of the first Rambler cars in Macon Co.

Until at least 1952, there was a Merris-Van Gundy reunion held in Decatur, IL, at Fairview Park on the 3rd Sunday of August for his descendants and those of sister, Nancy Merris.

John's sons, Elmer and John, were co-administrators of his estate.

Cemetery records have the name as Van Grundy. The grave site is located in Lot 3 Blk 12 and son, Elmer, and his wife, Ida, are buried beside John and Sarah.

Sarah Ann SCOBEY [Parents] was born in 1831 in IL. She died on 19 Apr 1904 in Decatur, Macon Co, IL. She was buried in Greenwood Cem, Decatur, Macon Co, IL. She married John VAN GUNDY on 1 Oct 1854 in Scott Co, IL.

They had the following children:

F i Mary Ann VAN GUNDY was born on 21 Jul 1855 in Scott Co, IL. She died on 29 Jul 1855 in Scott Co, IL. She was buried in McCaleb Cem, Bluffs, Scott Co, IL.

Mary Ann would later be joined at the cemetery by her Van Gundy
grandparents and two siblings.

M ix Charles E A VAN GUNDY was born on 12 Dec 1870 in Scott Co, IL. He died on 15 Jan 1871 in Scott Co, IL. He was buried in McCaleb Cem, Bluffs, Scott Co, IL.
M x Everett VAN GUNDY was born after 1870 in Scott Co, IL.

He was not mentioned in the 1870 census.

Nimrod "Nim" NEAVES [Parents] was born on 26 Sep 1826 in Bracken Co, KY. He died on 27 Apr 1900 in Jewel Co, KS. He was buried in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. He married Elizabeth Ann WORKMAN in 1855 in KY, probably Bracken Co.

Nimrod was a wealthy farmer and landowner by the time of his death, bequeathing land in 3 counties of 2 states.

Residences & events in his life:

1858-1865 Pendleton Co, KY. According to deed records, he owned land there between those years.

9/5/1859 Nimrod served as administrator of his father's estate. Brother James took him to court, details unknown.

1860 Brooksville, Bracken Co, KY. Rosa A Neaves was living with him according to the census, next door was brother, Joseph, and their aged mother, Juliet.

1870 The census taker found him at the same residence.

1/1872 Bracken Co, KY. Still there, the deed book lists Sarah A Workman, widow of Andrew; Samuel Jacobs and Mary E, his wife of Macon Co, IL; and Nimrod Neaves of Bracken Co, KY.

1873-5 Moultrie Co, IL.

A Sullivan IL mayor remembered Nimrod:

"(I) greatly admired the intrepid Nimrod Neaves, who showed up in Sullivan during the 1890s.
When he blew into town, you would have taken him for a tramp. But he was as sharp as a steel trap. His wife was a very bright woman and had all the marks of refinement.
The first I knew of Neaves he had bought a good farm a few miles west of town and paid all cash. I was in the abstract business then and I became acquainted with him very soon after his arrival. I never became intimately acquainted with him, so as to know many of his characteristics, but he told me once of his system in buying land, and it shows not only good sense but also his foxy disposition.
He told me that when he was in the market as a buyer of land, he put on his old clothes and appeared to be not only a man of no means, but of little sense as well. He hiked all around the country until he found the farm he wanted, then approached the owner and asked his price on the farm. He let him know that he had but a small amount of money in the bank--say $1,000 to buy a $20,000 farm--but he was expecting enough shortly to pay for it in full. If the owner would sell it to him for his price, he would pay him that $1,000 then and get him the rest in a short time. The owner believed he could get that $1,000 and keep his land, too, for he thought Neaves would never get the rest of the purchase price within the time specified, or within any time. Neaves was a man of considerable means."

1/25/1893 Nimrod and Elizabeth transferred property at E 1/2 SE S21 T14 R5 to daughter, Laura Van Gundy, for $1 by warranty deed, probably in preparation to moving further west.

1894 Jewell Co, KS, was their place of residence when Elizabeth died.

3/1900 Formoso, Jewell Co, KS, was where he wrote his will.

Nimrod's will, dated 3/31/1900, was entered into probate in Jewell Co, KS, on 6/1/1900. It stated:

"Mrs. Ethel Flynn VanGundy, wife of John VanGundy died at St.
Mary's hospital in Decatur Monday night after an illness of several
months.
An operation was performed on her last fall in the hopes of
aiding her to recover her health but she never rallied."

Another newspaper said:

"She had spent some time in a hospital in Decatur during which
practically no hope had been entertained for her recovery. She had
rallied and wanted to return home so she was taken from the hospital.
Recently, strong hopes had gathered that she might fully recover, and
she had been able to be wheeled about in a wheel chair, although it
was known that there was a possibility of a relapse at any
time......As a child she was happy, bright, and carefree, and quick to
form lasting friendships. As a young lady she was charming attractive
and popular, and as a wife and mother she will be sorely missed.
Although her many friends knew of her serious illness, they had begun
to hope, and the sudden news of her death came as a shock."

".....For the past year she had been in poor health and about two
weeks ago she returned from Decatur where she had been for six months
in a hospital....."

of Winfield Scott Schley, officer in charge at the battle of Santiago.

Again quoting from Dorisgene Webb:

"I wasn't around Uncle Dewey very much. Aunt Pauline really had my
respect! In my youth, I was scared to death of her, she could make me
quit crying in a second! In later years on the lake with her and Bill
and June (Doris' siblings), I really appreciated her sense of humor.
I have noticed the name Pauline is synonymous with laughter." (Doris
refers to others in the family by that name who also see the funny
side of life.)
