Palmyra, MO. He took an oath of allegiance to the US government, even though he sympathized with the confederate cause.
11/21/1864 Union authorities arrested him for violating his oath by harboring Confederate guerillas. Two captured guerillas, or deserters, testified that George had recently opened his home to them. One civilian and some militiamen also implicated him in robberies and horse thefts by several bushwackers, including those he allegedly welcomed to his house. Brother, Allen, may have been the individual involved since he was shot by Federal militia at the home of one of the implicated guerillas named Fagin.
George was eventually tried on charges of spying for the Confederate and stealing horses for the rebels, convicted, and incarcerated in St Louis and Jefferson City, from where he was eventually released.
Following the war he returned home to the farm.
