He suffered a spinal cord injury as a young man when he dived off a cliff and as a result spent his life in a wheelchair.
He worked for Allee Lumber Co for 30 years and was a member of the Central Community Church of Mattoon. He rose to 32nd Degree Mason in the Mattoon Lodge.
