Residences & events:

KY

1818 White Co, IL. In the state's first census, John was probably living with one of the "Wooley" families amid the Berrys and Shipleys.

1820 Fox River Twp, White Co, IL, where the census taker found him with a new family. There were besides himself 5 other members in the house....Elizabeth and 4 step-children. Next door was Henry Ooley and 3 doors down were his ex-in-laws, the Shipleys. Farther down on the other side were Enoch and Joel Berry.

1818 White Co, IL. At the state's first census there were 2 Wooley (Ooley?) families. In the same neighborhood was Enoch Berry, James Shipley (likely the family of his first wife) and Alexander Mahan (relationship yet unestablished but could be a McMahan). Also living in the same county was another Enoch Berry.

Sangamon Co, IL. He probably followed the Berry families but the exact date is unknown.

10/27/1827 Sangamon Co, IL. He was taxed $3.20 for 80 acres at W1/2 NW 34 of T15 R5 patented by Ezekial Drennen.

12/28/1827 He paid more tax:

$1.20 for 80 acres at W1/2 SW 35 of T15 R5 originally patented by John Fowler.
1.60 for 80 acres at W1/2 SW 26 of T15 R5 patented by John M Curtis

1830 Sangamon Co, IL. He was still there by census along with a Thomas Ooley.

5/2/1835 Sangamon Co, IL. John and William Purvis were among the names mentioned in the file on the estate of Barlet Haley who died intestate. Their relationship to deceased and reason for being named not stated but they were probably purchasers at the estate sale.

1840 Sangamon Co, IL. Again his family was counted there. Living in the same county was
Henry Ooley but no Thomas.

1850 There was a John Ooley in Green Co MO and one in Montgomery Co, AR, both states of Berry migrations but it is unknown which, if either, if this John. If Elizabeth died in IA in 1847, he most likely would have been there.

9/1/1852 From the Wisconsisn Land records is an item with the names of John Ooley and Elihu H Noyes, both local Moultrie/Coles Co, IL. names, in the remarks column. It was a cash sale of 40 acres patented by John H Harper and located at S14 T4N R4E.

1860 A John J Ooley was still in Green Co, MO.

Iowa Co, WI, where he died. The date of his arrival is unknown.

Matilda Shipley was born on 29 Oct 1795. She died on 9 Oct 1816 in KY/White Co, IL. She married John Ooley on 16 Feb 1813.

John remarried then.

Residences & events:

He was mentioned in brother George's will.
  F vi Ann Berry.
  F vii Mary Berry.

  F ix Sarah Berry.

Richard McMahan [Parents] was born in 1723 in Scotland. He died after 1794 in Nelson Co, KY, probably. He married Nancy Agnes Lilburn about 1745.

Residences & events:

VA

9-16-1783 Jefferson Co, KY. Richard received a 1000 acre land grant for his participation in the Revolutionary War.

1790 Nelson Co, KY. The date of his arrival there is unknown but he showed up for the first time on the county Tithables List "within the Bounds of Capt McDonals & Capt McFauls Companies." His tax bill was 3 tithes. Living nearby were James "McMachen" and the Berry families....William, Enoch, and George.

1791 He was not listed on the county's tithable list that year. His whereabouts are unknown or maybe the tax commissioner just missed him.

1793 Probably the same residence. His tax was based on 250 acres, 5 horses and 17 cattle. There were 2 males over 21 at his house. Nearby was son John and another John next door who was more likely James.

1794 His estate had decreased some, paying taxes on 200 acres, 3 horses and 16 cattle. Apparently some of the children had moved in with him because there were then 2 males ages 16-21 there.

He was listed on the 1794 Tax Records.

Nancy Agnes Lilburn was born about 1725. She married Richard McMahan about 1745.

They had the following children:

M i John Blair McMahan was born in 1747.

Residences & events:

1786 Nelson Co, KY. He and James were the only ones by the name on the county's first tax list and lived in the same area as brother-in-law, Enoch Berry. His tithe was 1.

Item in deed records:

5/8/1787 "Benjamin Stevens, wife Hannah, of Hunterdon, State of New Jersey, to John McMachen, 372 acres, 150 pounds, on Cox's Creek adjacent to John McGee."

1787 And yet nothing had changed since last tax time.

1788 By this time either the tax boundries had shifted or he and James had left the area since neither were included in the Tithables List.

1791 John was back and his tithe had grown to 2.

1793 John was amassing an estate. His tax that year was based on 264 acres, 2 blacks including 1 under the age of 16, 5 horses, and 10 cattle. His household included 1 male over 21 (himself) and 1 male under 21. Living in the same are were his father and another John who was probably actually James.

1794 He paid taxes on the same 264 acres, the same slaves but had shifted horses and cows to 3 horses 15 cattle.
M ii William McMahan was born on 9 Jan 1748. He died on 30 Jun 1794.
  M iii James McMahan.

He has not been verified as belonging to this family of siblings but is placed here because of the proximity of residences and events in his life.

Residences & events:

1786 Nelson Co, KY. He and brother John along with brother-in-law, Enoch Berry, lived in the same neighborhood at tax time, "where the county road crosses Salt River on the north side of the road including all waters of Coxes Creek." Their father had probably moved out of the area to the land grant he had recently received. John must have been the older brother with a bigger estate since his tithe was 2 while John's and Enoch's were only 1.

From Nelson Co, Pioneer is the following:

4/1/1787 "Isaac Cox, wife Mary, to James McMachan, 100 pounds, 200 acres on Coxs Creek where McMachan lives."

1787 And yet by next tax time his assets had shrunk to only 1 tithe. John and Enoch were still neighbors.

1788 Apparently the McMahans were missed by the county tax collector as their names were not there.

1790 At tax time, their father was back as was James but John was missing. James' tithe was 2 again.

1791 James lived next door to Enoch Berry and brother John was back but their father was then gone.

10/9/1792 James was appointed Tax Commissioner over "the residue" of the county that was not already defined. He was to follow the Permanent Revenue schedule that had been established in the June session of court:

For every 100 acres in proportion for greater or smaller quantity 2 shillings
For every slave, except those exempted because of age or infirmity 2 shillings
For every horse, mare, colt, or mule, except covering horses 8 pence
For covering horses, "the sum which such horse covers one mare the season, which rate or sum the owner shall note down when he delivers in his list of property to the com-
missioners"
For every head of cattle 3 pence
For every wheel on every coach or chariot 6 shillings
For all other riding carriages with 4 wheels,
except those used for agriculture 4 shillings/wheel
For all other riding carriages with 2 wheels 6 shillings/wheel
For every ordinary license 3 pounds
For every retail store within the state 10 pounds

12/12/1792 From court records: "Ordered that.... Benjamin Fry and James McMahan be allowed for forty days Service each as Commissioners of the Tax." Considering the table above, their pay was skimpy to say the least.

1793 James was probably the "John" living next door to his father at tax time. He owned only 3 horses and 12 cattle and his family included 1 male over 21 (himself) and 2 males age 16-21. Down the road was brother John.

1794 By that tax time, James had acquired an estate. His tax was based on 200 acres, 4 horses, 19 cattle, and 1 stud horse. Apparently one of the sons had moved out as there were only 1 male over 21 and 1 male 16-21 in the house.
