LDS records have a duplicate family which mirrors John and Mary's exactly but the dates are much earlier, making them too old for succeeding generations.
VA estate records used as documentation for John's death date as about 1695 must belong to another man by the same name, perhaps an uncle. DAR records use the same date. LDS records have his marriage date as 1695 and all the children were born later, the more plausible interpretation.
There was an estate that was inventoried in 1758 and a will probated in 1761, either of which may have belonged to this John.

According to a grandson, the family, having migrated from the south, were only mildly sympathetic to the Union cause in the Civil War.
