Pyrrhus WOODWARD was born on 1 Aug 1822. He died on 27 Dec 1898 in New Castle, IN. He was buried in South Mound Cem, New Castle, IN. He married Mary E HAWKINS on 15 Jan 1850 in Wayne Co, IN. Pyrrhus resided.

He was a carpenter and farmer.

1849 New Castle, IN. In preparation for marriage, Pyrrhus built a
new house in town but they lived there only 4 years before selling it
to his brother-in-law, Samuel Hazzard.

1854 He quit the carpenter trade and moved to the portion of his
father's farm which had been set aside for him and became a farmer.
Today that farm is nearly all located within the city limits of New
Castle.

Pyrrhus and Mary lived on the farm until the Civil War when he
enlisted as Capt of Co C 36th IN Inf. He was forced to resign due to
disability from wounds he received at Chickamauga, GA. One history
says he "was a natural born soldier, and came honestly by the war
spirit which sent him into the Mexican War and later into the great
conflict. The martial instincts of the sire had descended to the son,
and when the nation leaped to arms, he was among the first to answer
the call for volunteers."

Mary E HAWKINS [Parents] was born on 30 Oct 1825 in Wayne Co, IN. She died on 17 Jan 1899 in New Castle, IN. She was buried in South Mound Cem, New Castle, IN. She married Pyrrhus WOODWARD on 15 Jan 1850 in Wayne Co, IN.

Mary was described as a noble Christian with a domestic disposition, a
devoted wife and loving mother.

She died just 3 wks after her husband.
