James BATHE [Parents] was born on 6 May 1847 in Moultrie Co, IL. He died on 7 May 1920 in Moultrie Co, IL, at home. He was buried in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. He married Matilda "Tilda" BUXTON in Jul 1866 in Moultrie Co, IL.

1860 Moultrie Co, IL. He was listed at age 13 in the census with Uncle John Powell, who raised him from 6 years of age after being left an orphan.

He served in the Civil War with the rank of Recruit and discharged 12/16/1865.

1870 Moultrie Co, IL. His in-laws, Frederick Buxton, 61, and James Buxton, 15, were living with him at census time.

1880 Jonathan Creek, Moultrie Co, IL. He was living 5 doors down from James and Evaline Powell, having bought the property from them. Also listed was a servant girl.

1900 Sullivan Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. In the census, Daisy and Simon were the only children still at home, James was a farmer, the farm being mortgage free.

3/24/1904 He and W C Carwood, undertaker in charge, gave affidavit for Elizabeth Powell, widow of Nelson, in her application for widow's pension that "they lived near neighbors for several years and were intimately acquainted. That they were at the funeral and burial services of Nelson E Powell, and viewed the dead body in the casket."

The 1900 census lists his birthdate as 12/1847.

His obituary stated:

"James Bathe, one of the best known retired farmers of this
vicinity, and a veteran of the war of the Rebellion, died at his home
Wednesday. Mr. Bathe had the distinction of serving in Grant's
regiment during the War of the Rebellion, and was the last survivor of
that regiment."

Matilda "Tilda" BUXTON was born in 1847 in PA. She died in 1926 in Moultrie Co, IL. She was buried in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. She married James BATHE in Jul 1866 in Moultrie Co, IL. Matilda was born in 1846 in PA.

She attended the 1921 & 1923 Powell family reunions at Sullivan, IL.

Richard S TICHENOR died on 19 Mar 1864 in Moultrie Co, IL. He was buried on 21 Mar 1864. He married Mary Ann POWELL on 3 Mar 1864 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL.

From the McPheeters' family letters: "He started out yesterday
afternoon after the cows, took the gun with him and, accidentally shot
himself. (He) had been married two weeks last thursday. Mrs Mary is
now a widow. Her Husband will be burried tomorrow."

His death was later ruled a suicide by the Coronors jury. He had
joined the army just a few days prior.

Mary Ann POWELL [Parents] was born on 6 Oct 1844 in IL. She died in 1930. She married Richard S TICHENOR on 3 Mar 1864 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL.

with property = $50/900. He and his first wife had no children living
with them but did have a Louisa Kellar, 22, listed as an assistant.

Mary Ann POWELL [Parents] was born on 6 Oct 1844 in IL. She died in 1930. She married Sowell Josiah "Sol" GREEN on 7 Jul 1866.

1859 Jonathan Creek Twp, Moultrie Co, IL Frank came to IL to look
after some land his father had purchased, having no intention of
staying. However, he remained at Jonathan Creek during the Civil War,
met his future wife and married shortly after the war, staying
permanently.

The county history carried his biography, describing him as "one of
the active and energetic farmers of the township, and owns 626 acres
of land, of which 619 lie in one body. He has also been engaged in
raising cattle and trading in stock.....In his politics, his father
was an old Line Whig, and Mr. McDonald began life in sympathy with
that organization, but on the dissolution of the Whig party became a
Democrat, and voted first for Breckenridge in 1860. In local
elections he very frequently votes for the man whom he considers best
fitted for the office."

1875 Jonathan Creek Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. He was listed in the atlas
as a landowner among the 1001 township residents.

1880 He was elected township supervisor.

Sarah Elizabeth POWELL [Parents] was born in 1848 in Moultrie Co, IL, 1 mile SE of Sullivan. She died before 1942. She married John Frank MCDONALD on 18 Oct 1865 in Moultrie Co, IL.

She attended the 1933 Powell family reunion in Sullivan, IL, with Victor and his family.

Samuel W Jr WRIGHT died after 1921. He married Angeline "Angie" POWELL on 31 Oct 1871 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL.

He was a speaker at the Powell family reunions at Sullivan, IL, mentioned in those minutes often.

He served 3 terms as Township Supervisor, was Chairman of the Board, and "has been instrumental in effecting many changes that have benefited the county."

1890 Samuel was elected to the State Senate, representing the 33rd District as a Democrat.

His biography was glowing:

"Cultivated, educated and manly, with no inclination to boast of natural advantages or acquirements, he is one who naturally takes his place at the head of affairs and is recognized universally as one of nature's noblemen."

He and son, Walter, attended the 1921 Powell family reunion at Sullivan, IL.

Angeline "Angie" POWELL [Parents] was born on 4 Mar 1850 in Moultrie Co, IL. She died on 1 Feb 1936. She married Samuel W Jr WRIGHT on 31 Oct 1871 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL.

In the 1870 census, Angie was still at home as a school teacher.

She was described in her husband's biography: "His wife is a charming woman, who, while her chief interests are centered in her home and family, presides with great dignity and elegance over the domestic realm. She is a delightful hostess, making rich or poor, great or small, feel at home and easy in her gracious presence."

1906 She was one of the first Deaconesses elected to serve in the First Christian Church but according to church records "their position is not recognized with any regularity and they held no authority on the Board of the church."

1868 Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. According to his obituary, he was a
Sullivan merchant, as a grocer for years, then on 11/12/1885, embarked
in the drug business.

He was a member of the Christian Church.

His headstone is engraved "Odd Fellows Mason."

Martha Alice "Mattie\Mollie" POWELL [Parents] was born in 1854. She died in 1923. She was buried in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. She married Charles T HARRIS on 1 Jan 1877 in Moultrie Co, IL.

Her death was after 8/31/1923 when she attended the Powell family reunion.

They had the following children:

She was not listed among the survivors when her father died but, as niece, did post securities in the estate of Wealthy Ann Pogue Powell along with JA Wright.

Cassius M "Cash" POWELL [Parents] was born on 11 Oct 1860 in Moultrie Co, IL. He died on 9 Jan 1942 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, at home. He was buried in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. He married Wealthy Anna Pogue on 16 Oct 1883 in Shelby Co, IL. Cassius resided in 1923.


His obituary said he was a member of a prominent Sullivan family.

1880 Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, the residence for of his life, he was
still living at home and, in the census, was listed as a clerk in a
grocery store.

Cash, as a farmer for 40 years, was also active in the public affairs
of Sullivan.

1900 In the census, his occupation had been recorded as farmer but
then crossed out, his mother was living alone next door.

1907 He retired per his obituary which said he had been retired for
35 years but it may have actually been longer as noted by the 1900
census.

He was the last of his parents' family of 8 children to die and he had
been ill for several years.

The funeral for Cash was held at the McMullin Funeral Home on Tuesday
afternoon at 2:30 PM.

His residence was recorded in the Powell family reunion roster of 1923.

Wealthy Anna Pogue was born on 18 Aug 1860 in Shelby Co, IL. She died on 5 Feb 1932 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, at home. She was buried in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. She married Cassius M "Cash" POWELL on 16 Oct 1883 in Shelby Co, IL.

She became a member of the Church of Christ at the age of 16, placing
her membership with the Old Antioch church in Shelby county. In 1907
she transferred her membership to the Sullivan Christian church.

Her obituary states: "She had been ill for some time but her sudden
death was unexpected, as she was thought to be on the road to
recovery." She left no will and daughter, Pearl, as her only heir,
was appointed administrator of the estate. Martha L Harris and JA
Wright posted securities.

Her funeral was held at the family residence on Sunday at 3 PM with
Rev C.E. Barnett, of the Sullivan Christian Church, officiating.
Pallbearers were: John Gauger, Carl Hill, Mel Gifford, Dave Cummins,
Roy Patterson, and Frank McPheeters.

They had the following children:

  F i Pearl M POWELL was born on 28 Feb 1886. She died on 30 Oct 1969 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, Titus Memorial Presbyterian Home. She was buried in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL.

Pearl graduated from DePauw University and taught school for 35 years
in the Sullivan and Decatur schools. She was at the Roosevelt Junior
High in Decatur when her father died in 1942.

She was a member of the Christian Church and several social clubs

Her funeral was held at 1:30 PM Saturday at the McMullin Funeral Home
in Sullivan with Rev James L Van Lear of Decatur officiating.

Sowell Josiah "Sol" GREEN was born in Sangamon Co, IL. He married Eliza KELLER. Sowell resided in 1910.
