Hudson "Huts" MARTIN was born in 1836 in Jefferson, Jefferson Co, KY. He married Camilla T(yrold) "Millie" Purvis on 16 Feb 1859 in Moultrie Co, IL, by A L Kellar, MG.

Residences & events:

1860 Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. He was a farmer with property = $800 at census time. Living with him was his mother Susanna, 59, a Charles Bohana, 9, and Valentine Nett, 29, who was also a farmer with property of $1000/500, all from KY. Next door was James and Eveline Powell.

He served in Company M, of the 9th Illinois Calvary during the Civil War.

The McPheeters family mentioned Huts in letters during the war:
Dated 11/8/1863, "Mr. Martin is going to have singing at the school house to night."

5/31/1865 Amid complaints of farming in a wet spring with poor wheat crop results, "Some of Mathers not worth cutting, Sentels will lose some. Part of Hagermans is worthless. Cornwall has 60 acres new prarie that he wont get his seed off. Huts Martin not 1/2 a crop, and so on throughout this part of the county."

1870 Jonathan Creek Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. In the census, Huts was a still a farmer and his property had grown to $3600/1800. Sister-in-law, Charlotte Purvis, was visiting and his aged mother was still living with them. Charles Bohannan, 19, was also still there, now listed as farm hand. Next door was Levi Seass and 3 doors down the other way was Joseph Purdy Powell.

Bement, Piatt Co, IL.

Camilla T(yrold) "Millie" Purvis [Parents] was born in 1839 in Shelby Co, IL. She died before 1900. She married Hudson "Huts" MARTIN on 16 Feb 1859 in Moultrie Co, IL, by A L Kellar, MG.

Camilla was named for her Aunt Camilla Ooley.

They had the following children:

  F i Mary MARTIN was born in 1858 in IL. She died before 1860.

She was not listed with her family in the census.
  M ii Allen B MARTIN was born in Jan 1860 in IL.
  F iii Zida E "Zoddie" MARTIN was born in 1862. She died on 24 May 1863 in Moultrie Co, IL. She was buried in Daugherty Cem, Moultrie Co, IL.

Her demise was recorded by neighbors, the McPheeters, in letters:
"Mr. Hudson Martins little girl died last thursday morning. She was
the same age of Julia (McPheeters). Her disease was congestion of the
stomach. she only lay sick five days. Was a beautiful child and
uncommon smart for one of her age. Her parents take her death very
hard. Old Mrs Martin was not at home but they have since sent for her
have gone to Mattoon to day after her. Little Zodie was interred in
Purvises grave yard. I attended the burial which took place at four
oclock on last thursday evening."

Her Purvis grandparents are buried on either side of her.

John Wesley PURVIS [Parents] was born on 4 Oct 1843 in Shelby Co, IL. He died on 5 Feb 1902 in Bluford, Jefferson Co, IL. He married Nancy Jane SOLOMON on 2 Nov 1871 in Moultrie Co, IL, by A M Pilcher, MG. John resided in 1900.

Residences & events in his life:

5/3/1864 During the Civil War, he enlisted with Co I 135th IL Inf with the rank of Cpl, mustered for only 100 days service.

9/28/1864 St Louis, MO. He received his discharge after serving his term here.

4/7/1866 Moultrie Co, IL. He signed a petition for the township and also for a bridge at Jonathan Creek.

1870 E Nelson Twp, Moultrie Co, Il. In the census John's name was recorded as James. He was listed as a farmer with $800 in personal property, as head of the house and single but had a varied household which included his 62 yr old father, step-mother, 2 sisters, a new half-brother, as well as 2 adopted children, Amanda Webbe, 14, and George Reams, also 14. The last two may have been his father's children rather than his. George Reams was probably a brother to the Sarah Reames, 11, who was living with Levi Seass, and the Charles Reames, 19, living with the Henry Evans family. Both George and Sarah were born in IN while Charles was born in KY.

1874 MO. His second child was born and died there.

1875 Moultrie Co, IL. Back home again.

Aft 7/1883 Germantown, Seward Co, NE. One family history places him here until after 5/1886 but from items below, he was back home earlier than that.

6/16/1885 Seward Co, NE. His family was counted by the census taker in Precinct F along with that of brother Enoch's. At that time the family included, besides himself and Nancy, 5 children and 2 nephews, Arthur Purvis, age 25 and Andrew Purvis, age 12.

1885 Wesley initiated trouble between his father's 2 families, resulting in the destitute step-mother moving her family to NE.

8/8/1895 Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, was his residence when his last set of twins was born.

7/15/1896 Jefferson Co, IL, was their address when the last child was born and where he himself died.

Two children died in Keenes, IL, in 1908 and 1910, according to someone's hand written family listing. Keenes is no longer on the map and was probably in Jefferson Co, IL, also.

The dates posted are from hand written family records in the possession of Edna Powell Van Gundy. Some listings have 10/11/1842 as his birth date.

Some family listings show his death date as 2/9/1904.

Nancy Jane SOLOMON was born on 12 Aug 1854 in Clark Co, IL. She died on 12 Feb 1904 in Bluford, Jefferson Co, IL/CA. She married John Wesley PURVIS on 2 Nov 1871 in Moultrie Co, IL, by A M Pilcher, MG.

Clyde was a twin to Claud.
  M xiv Robert Earl PURVIS was born on 15 Jul 1896 in Jefferson Co, IL. He died on 7 Sep 1896 in Jefferson Co, IL.

Some listings have his birth month as October.

Van Rensulaer Merritt.Van married Charlotte PURVIS on 28 May 1879.

Charlotte PURVIS [Parents] was born on 2 Apr 1845 in Moultrie Co, IL. She died on 6 May 1885 in Olathe, KS. She married Van Rensulaer Merritt on 28 May 1879.

From the McPheeters family letters:

8/11/1864 "Miss Charlotte Purvis is now confined to her bed, and has been for several days, but is some better this morning. She has been in bad health for some months past. I think she will get well."

8/21/1864 "Charlotte Purvis is now getting over a severe spell of sickness."

1870 She was visiting sister, Camilla Martin, when the census taker came.

Charlotte and Alvira were twins.


Male KUHLMAN.Male married Mary Catherine PURVIS about 1870. Male resided in 1900.

Mary Catherine PURVIS [Parents] was born in 1851 in Moultrie Co, IL. She died after 1900. She married Male KUHLMAN about 1870.


Jasper Newton "Jap" PURVIS [Parents] was born on 12 Oct 1869 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. He died on 1 Jul 1939 in Phoenix, AZ. He was buried in Greenwood Memorial Park, Phoenix, AZ.

Funeral services for Jasper were held at the Chapel Grimshaw Mortuary with Rev. C. Arlin Heydon of the First Baptist Church officiating.

William Joseph "Will" PURVIS [Parents] was born on 11 Apr 1871 in Moultrie Co, IL. He died on 15 Jun 1944 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co, WI.

He had a bee farm and even had a photo taken of himself with a long "bee" beard.

Eliza PURVIS [Parents] was born on 9 Dec 1857 in IL. She died about 1955. She married John W TURNER on 7 May 1877 in Coles Co, IL.

"Mrs David Parse, well-known Mattoon resident, observed her 91st birthday anniversary today at her home at 1721 Piatt avenue.
Still active, Mrs. Parse makes frequent trips to the Mattoon Public Libraray and is well informed on current events. She enjoys reminiscing with frineds on the Mattoon of many years ago, and the changes that have taken place.....
For a few years during her younger days she lived at Topeka, Kan, and Appleton City, MO. The rest of her life has been spent in Mattoon.
Mrs Parse is a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist church.
Her life motto is:
Build a fence of trust around today,
Look not out upon tomorrow.
God will give you grace to bear
Whatever comes of joy or sorrow"

The article gave details of her heritage and family history. She was the only one of the siblings still living at that time.

And again in 1955:

"Mrs. David Parse, 98 of 1721 Piatt avenue, one of Mattoon's oldest residents, was taken to the Atkins Nursing home Saturday afternoon by ambulance. She was reported seriously ill with a heart ailment. Mrs. Parse, who has been living in or around Mattoon for almost a century has seen Mattoon grow from a muddy prairie village to one of Central Illinois' foremost cities."

She was 98 when she entered the nursing home and she outlived all her siblings even though she was the oldest.


David Parse was born about 1855. He died on 21 Jun 1933. He married Eliza PURVIS on 10 Apr 1929.

Eliza PURVIS [Parents] was born on 9 Dec 1857 in IL. She died about 1955. She married David Parse on 10 Apr 1929.
