She attended the 1929 Powell family reunion as Mrs. James Bracken and signed her name in 1936 as Rella.

They had the following children:

  F ii Eudora BRACKEN.

John Dolen died after 1947. He married Grace BRACKEN before 1930.

Grace BRACKEN [Parents] died after 1947. She married John Dolen before 1930.

She attended the 1947 Powell family reunion, along with her husband.

They had the following children:

Betty never married.
  F ii Virginia Dolen. Virginia resided.

She was a school teacher who also never married.
  M iii Gerald Dolen.

Edward KERCHEVAL was born in IN. He died before 1880. He married Sarah PURVIS on 7 Feb 1860 in Moultrie Co, IL, by A L Kellar, MG.

Daughter, Isabel, was living with relatives in the 1880 census.

Sarah PURVIS [Parents] was born on 8 Feb 1838 in E Nelson Twp, Shelby Co, IL. She died on 5 Jun 1863. She married Edward KERCHEVAL on 7 Feb 1860 in Moultrie Co, IL, by A L Kellar, MG.

Sarah and Elizabeth were twins.

They had the following children:

In the 1880 census, she was living with her uncle and aunt, William and Mahulda Purvis.

Edward OLIVER was born in Staffordshire, England. He married Elizabeth PURVIS on 27 Mar 1862 in Moultrie Co, IL, by A L Kellar, MG.

He came to IL in 1857.

Elizabeth PURVIS [Parents] was born on 8 Feb 1838 in E Nelson Twp, Shelby Co, IL. She died on 26 Mar 1915. She married Edward OLIVER on 27 Mar 1862 in Moultrie Co, IL, by A L Kellar, MG.

In the 1860 census she was 22 and still at home as an assistant.

Elizabeth was a twin to Sarah.


James Henry PURVIS [Parents] was born on 16 Jan 1842 in E Nelson Twp, Shelby Co, IL. He died on 14 Jul 1919 in Comanche Co, TX. He was buried in Graham's Chapel, Comanche Co, TX. He married Emma Wooten on 14 Dec 1865 in Moultrie Co, IL, by B F Crockett, JP.

Residences & events:

1860 Moultrie Co, IL. In the census Henry's occupation was farmwork and he was still at home.

Apparently he leaned toward the Copperhead movement during the Civil War as pointed out in the McPheeters family letters:

9/6/1863 "Henry Purvis was riding by Travilion's a few days since. The old man (Squire Purvis) was on the side of the road. Henry shouted for Vollandingham. The old man replied that Vollandingham was a tory and so were all his friends. Very well done."

Another letter hinted at his personal relationships:

4/5/1863 "I expect you will hear of a wedding in this neighborhood before long. (Henry Purvis)"

9/1871 He paid a school tax for his property at T13 R6.

By 7/1873 KS. He started the westward trek.

1877 TX, where he would spend the rest of his life.

1900 Comanche Co, TX, where he farmed several thousand acres of land.

Emma Wooten was born in Oct 1841 in OH. She married James Henry PURVIS on 14 Dec 1865 in Moultrie Co, IL, by B F Crockett, JP.

In the 1860 census she was still at home and listed as an assistant. Three doors down lived her future in-laws, the Purvis family.

Samuel Harden PURVIS [Parents] was born on 5 Sep 1850 in E Nelson Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. He died on 7 Aug 1914. He was buried in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. He married Amanda DAVIS on 4 Apr 1874.

He was buried in French Cem, Allenville, Moultrie Co, IL. He married Mary E PATTERSON on 17 Apr 1875 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, at the bride's home.

1875 After his wife died, he moved back in with his parents, probably
so his family could help take care of his small daughter, Bertha.

1880 E Nelson Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. He was still living with his
parents as a farmer when the census taker passed by.

1900 Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. In this census his occupation was
county judge, boarding next door was the county clerk and a lawyer.

The following is recorded in the history of the French Cemetery of
Moultrie Co, IL:

"During the funeral of Mrs. Eldridge (Matilda) A. Goodwin in 1897, the
weather was so bad that the children nearly froze. It was then
decided to build a chapel. Instead, Jack French, Walter Delana, John
D. Purvis and Columbia Misenhiemer went to the 1905 St. Louis World's
Fair and purchased a building complete with chairs. This was moved
adjacent to the cemetery. These same chairs have recently been given
to families of the interred for keepsakes. There never was an
organized church but church and Sunday school were well attended. The
chapel is now used for Memorial Services only."

His obituary in the newspaper simply stated:

"John D. Purvis ex County Judge of Moultrie County died Sunday at home
in Sullivan. Buried at French Cemetery Monday. Born in East Nelson
township 54 years ago."

His funeral was held on a Monday and he was buried with his second wife.

Mary E PATTERSON was born on 26 Nov 1855 in PA. She died on 12 Dec 1879 in Moultrie Co, IL. She was buried in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. She married John Downing PURVIS on 17 Apr 1875 in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, at the bride's home.

Mary was buried among the Patterson family.

Following John's death Rose married J.W. Bolin.
