Dale Eugene VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born on 19 Jun 1940 in Mattoon, Coles Co, IL, at 2805 Richmond Ave. He married Lura Jane THAYER on 3 Jul 1960 in Mattoon, Coles Co, IL, Broadway Christian Church by Rev Howard McFadden.

He is an outgoing person, demonstrating his love for people nearly every time the family is on a public outing by disappearing, only to be found engaged in an extended conversation with a complete stranger. He has a soft heart but a strong sense of right and wrong, living his Christianity naturally while making the family primary in his life, giving priority to their needs and interests over his.

Residences & events in his life:

1959 Mattoon, Coles Co, IL. Following graduation from high school, Dale took a job with the New York Central railroad where he was still employed at the time of marriage.

5/1961 101 N 26th St. We moved often the first year of marriage while upgrading to larger and better apartments, then settled into a small house before the first child arrived.

6/1962 Decatur, Macon Co, IL. The tenure there was only for the summer while Dale worked temporarily as Loan Officer with a loan company. It was during this time that Aunt Ella and Stanley Walker earned a special place in our hearts.

9/1962 Mattoon, IL. A return to home ground where Dale worked at various jobs, often two at a time, including clerking at two drug stores, driving tractors for two farmers, etc, and as the family expanded, so did the houses, from 1509 Shelby, to 2809 Shelby, to 3333 Champaign.

Spring 1966 124 S Ridge, Arcola, IL. Taking a position as Controller at the USI Chemical Co at Tuscola, the family moved to be nearer his job. Dale's uncle, Warren Arthur, who also lived at Arcola, was happy to have family moving nearby and found just the right house to rent, a large brick home, called the Skinner Mansion, on a double lot. It had been vacant for some time but well kept and was most certainly a grand place in its early days.

6/1967 Humboldt Twp, Mattoon, IL. We purchased our first house, a large older home with 1/2 acre located 3 miles north of town, from another uncle, Andrew Honn.

2/1969 Dale settled on his life's career at Central IL Public Service beginning as a rodman with the survey crew, moving to meter reader, and eventually becoming a journeyman electrician in the substation department.

1975 2408 Prairie, Mattoon. Finding that school children in lots of activities meant several daily trips to town, we moved into town.

11/1981 #18 Vance Dr, Olney, Richland Co, IL. Dale was transferred with CIPS as a substation troubleman.

3/1991 #8 Rolling Green, Mattoon, IL. Back home again after Dale was promoted to Dispatcher and transferred for the second time, we settled in the country club community on the golf course where Dale could pursue his favorite leisure time activity.

Lura Jane THAYER was born on 11 May 1943 in Casey, Clark Co, IL. She married Dale Eugene VAN GUNDY on 3 Jul 1960 in Mattoon, Coles Co, IL, Broadway Christian Church by Rev Howard McFadden.

As a musician on both piano and organ, I have played in nearly every church in Mattoon, often as their primary musician and, as such, have been involved in several of the family's weddings. I also worked, first as a Tupperware representative, then at JCPenneys as inventory clerk/receptionist/secretary before taking a position at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center as an insurance rep. In 1981 when Dale transferred, I also transferred to Richland Memorial Hospital as a patient accounts representative, moving to supervisor of a physicians billing office, and finally into the collections area. Upon returning to Mattoon, I retired until 1993 when I returned to work as the business office supervisor at Carle Clinic, staying 2 1/2 years. Finally I found time to work on this book and other branches of the family.

They had the following children:

M i Michael Todd VAN GUNDY was born on 21 Aug 1961.
F ii Julia Lynn VAN GUNDY was born on 28 Jul 1963.
M iii Brian Douglas VAN GUNDY was born on 27 Nov 1964.
M iv Derek Sean VAN GUNDY was born on 30 Apr 1969.
F v Jamie Leigh VAN GUNDY was born on 30 Oct 1972.

Joseph Dewey "JD" VAN GUNDY [Parents] was born on 9 Dec 1919 in Morocco, Newton Co, IN. He married Dorothy Ellen ARTHUR on 30 Oct 1939 in Brazil, IN, by Rev Elmer S Cox, Baptist Min.

Other marriages:
Creviston Diltz Spriggs, Delores "Dodie"

JD related that in his younger days he had a very short temper (probably caused by older brothers who loved to torment anyone smaller) and he always carried a lead pipe, ball bat, or brick, as protection. Teachers habitually kept him after school, until about 4:30, to allow the other children time to reach home safely. Once he narrowly missed one of the brothers when he swung at him but missed and shattered the screen door instead. JD feels his brother would have died had he taken the blow. Today, JD is a milder person, is health and weight conscious, taking daily walks of several miles, regardless of the weather, and controlling his diet.

Following the death of his father, JD assumed the role of family patriarch, not only for his parent's family but for his Aunt Ella and Stanley Walker and the Arthur family, as wll. He was the first person called in case of emergency, sometimes even before emergency personnel, his advice was sought before major decisions and communication among the family often flowed through him.

Residences & events:

8/1938 Mattoon, Coles Co, IL, was his sole residence except for his service time. JD went to work at the Midcontinent Map Co and continued there for the next 10 years, with a short hiatus while in the Air Force.

6/19/1940 214 1/2 S 17th St, Mattoon, Coles Co, IL, where son, Dale, was born.

12/17/1943 2805 Richmond was the address listed when JD was inducted and ordered to Ft Sheridan, IL, to begin active duty in the US Air Force.

12/22/1943 Keesler Field, Mississippi. JD was transferred for pre-aviation cadet basic training.

San Antonio, TX, was their residence while he was in Air Force Cadet training but the war came to a close too soon for him to see action.

11/10/1945 Rantoul, IL. JD was discharged from the Air Force at Chanute Air Force Base.

12/1948 He quit the Map Co to start as a US Postal Clerk, eventually being in charge of vehicle maintenance in addition to other duties. He often worked at various other jobs through the years, in conjunction with the post office, such as delivering produce or freight.

820 N 20th, Mattoon, IL, where they bought their first house. Years later, daughter, Phyllis, would live across the street from them.

His photo was in the paper along with the caption: "Joseph D. VanGundy...is presented a certificate of recognition for a suggestion in improved mail handling by Palmer G. Boyle, field service officer of the Chicago regional office. The certificate, presented on behalf of
Postmaster General J Edward Day, was accompanied by a $50 cash award. This is the first such award presented to an employe of the local post office in connection with the suggestion program which has been in effect for several years." That suggestion was the precursor for zip codes, now a nationwide necessity. However, a law professor who
became Postmaster General in 1961 was credited with the idea of zip codes.

1958 The newspaper also carried the story of an extended vacation the family took: "Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Van Gundy and children, Dale, Phyllis and Barbara, and Mrs. R.E. Van Gundy (his mother) have returned to their homes in this city after a month's trip to the west coast." It continued by listing the itinerary and relatives they visited along the way and ended by saying they had traveled 7000 miles.

7/6/1971 Another news photo and caption which said JD was holding the new eight-cent commomorative stamp honoring the inauguration of the new federal system for operating the mail service.

1976 He retired from the Post Office at age 57 but continued to work part time at a local vending company where he reconciled accounts and counted collections.

820 N 21st, Mattoon, IL. As the children left home, they found the house too big so they moved to another house in the same neighborhood, this time across the street from daughter, Barbara.

2717 Oak, Mattoon, IL. After the last child married, they moved to an even smaller home, all on ground level.

Following the second marriage, he quit all jobs and devoted his time to fishing and visiting with friends and relatives at local restaurants.

Dorothy Ellen ARTHUR [Parents] was born on 17 Jun 1922 in Humboldt Twp, Coles Co, IL. She died on 22 Aug 1992 in Mattoon, Coles Co, IL.
